BEPI Article Recap:
LEESBURG, Va., September 23, 2009 - Located in the D.C.-metro area of Gaithersburg, Md., the B. F. Saul Company Hotel Division’s two-year, $9 million Holiday Inn renovation project began in 2007 as part of the hotel chain’s worldwide campaign to re-launch its brand with a more contemporary image, showcase improved quality and drive consistency.
As part of a complete exterior upgrade and substantial interior improvements, the project incorporated a variety of environmentally responsible and recycled materials, as well as water- and energy-conserving products.
One of the largest and most notable project components in the area of energy efficiency was a complete window replacement initiative. Seeking a window solution that provided a combination of high energy ratings, modern aesthetics and improved sound abatement, B.F. Saul Company approached REHAU for advisement on the latest in commercial curtain wall window systems.
"The Holiday Inn Gaithersburg project included aggressive goals we felt were ideally achieved by employing our latest REHAU-Polytec(TM) 50 hybrid curtain wall system, which we’ve recently introduced into the North America commercial construction market from Europe," said Mike Maher, Eastern region commercial sales manager, windows and doors, at REHAU."
In addition to providing a superior 0.29 U-value, particularly when compared to the 0.44 U-value of the aluminum replacement windows the hotel had originally planned to use, the REHAU-Polytec 50 hybrid curtain wall system enabled the project’s receipt of a $0.60 per square foot tax deduction under the Commercial Building Tax Deduction (CBTD) on the 36,000 square feet of improved hotel space.
"To determine the hotel’s qualification for the CBTD, energy modeling using the installed REHAU-Polytec 50 hybrid curtain wall window system was conducted, and showed a resulting regulated utility cost reduction of 12.4 percent," said Justin Aruck, project manager at EMO Energy Solutions, the engineering firm that conducted the project’s energy modeling. "Overall, the REHAU-Polytec 50 hybrid curtain wall system provides a modeled energy cost savings of nearly $10,000 per year," said Aruck.
"Using the REHAU-Polytec 50 hybrid curtain wall system for the Holiday Inn Gaithersburg project meant a triple win for B.F. Saul Company, as they secured a better first cost over that of aluminum windows, reduced their annual energy costs and have now qualified for a $37,000 tax deduction for 2009," said Mike Maher.
"The project provides a concrete example of the real and significant benefits that can be achieved from installing the latest in energy efficient building products, including the REHAU-Polytec 50 hybrid curtain wall system," Maher said.
