BEPI Article Recap:

Clayton Homes, which this year introduced the new energy-efficient, prefabricated home model i-house, has received LEED certification after applying the same measures to its home offices in Blount County, TN.

Kevin Clayton, Clayton Homes CEO, told attendees at a banquet Friday celebrating the green designation that the right thing to do for the community and environment is moreover the best thing economically for the company. He praised the company's Building Facilities Group for pushing the effort to achieve LEED certification, which recognizes design, construction and operation of a building in a green manner.

The effort, which began about three years ago, involved top-to-bottom changes to Clayton Homes headquarters at 5000 Clayton Road.

Don Horton, with Knoxville, TN, architect firm McCarty Holsaple McCarty, who administered the LEED certification process for Clayton Homes, said the Clayton headquarters is among only four in Tennessee and two in Knoxville that have LEED certification. The other Knoxville building is the John Duncan Federal Office Building.

The green effort at Clayton Homes began as an attempt to save energy costs, cut down on water use and recycle at the home office, Clayton said. It went so well, there was talk of going even further and seeking LEED certification. As efficiency measures were added to the building through this process, the idea developed of putting the same features in the homes the company sells, Clayton said.

The process mainly was driven from the bottom up by a relatively young, environmentally conscious work force at Clayton Homes, Clayton said.
